Singapore – The “Vertical Cities Asia International Design Competition and Symposium 2013: Everyone Harvests” publication was officially launched this evening at the URA Centre. Co-organized by the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) School of Design and Environment and Beijing Vantone Citylogic Investment Corporation, and co-sponsored by World Future Foundation, the publication collects in entirety the proposals and symposium papers that were presented at the third Vertical Cities Asia International Design Competition held in Singapore last year.
The third in the series, “Everyone Harvests” comes after the first volume “Everyone Needs Fresh Air” and the second volume “Everyone Ages”. The editorial team for the publication was made up of an elite group of industry heavyweights including Ms. Kazuyo Sejima, partner at award-winning architectural firm SANAA, Mr. Peter Head, Executive Chairman of the Ecological Sequestration Trust, Ms. Allison G. Williams, Vice President and Director of Design at engineering design firm AECOM, Mr Jeffrey Ho, Managing Director of Surbana International Consultants and Mr. Dickson Despommier, Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University.
A curatorial compilation of essays and research papers undertaken by the jury members and the faculty members from each participating university, the “Everyone Harvests” publication also collects together for the first time the full series of creative solutions proposed by the ten universities that participated in last year’s competition. Twenty teams were challenged to address urban agriculture by designing solutions for the sustainable production of safe and varied food supplies for a site located near Hanoi in Vietnam. Those ideas include “Close City”, the winning entry submitted by China’s Tongji University which took first prize at last year’s competition.
Professor Ho Teck Hua, Vice President (Research Strategy) and Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professor, NUS, Mr. Khoo Teng Chye, Executive Director for the Centre for Livable Cities, Mr. Hao Jiebin, Managing Director of Beijing Vantone Citylogic Investment Corp and WFF Board Directors Mr. Chan Siew Wei and Mr. Lu Bo also attended the publication launch.
